Butyl rubber gaskets are manufactured from a mixture of isobutylene and a small amount of isoprene.  The compound material is less porous than most other gasket material and is ideally suited to sealing applications involving compressed air and gases due to the elastomers impermeability.  They also have a good tear resistance and shock absorption properties.  Butyl rubber gaskets are usually used in automotive gaskets.  Common applications include truck body mounts, bonded overload pads, cradle mounts, and elastic damper hang-straps.  You should note that butyl does not provide good fuel and oil resistance.  In construction, butyl  is often used alone or in combination with other compounds to create window seals.
